MALIK Career Highlights:
It is easier to write that I did absolutely nothing for this organization....nothing.
MY STORY:
I had no damn interest in College Fraternities. My uncle and mentor Cecil who had me read Stolen Legacy and other books at a VERY early age, made sure that I never thought once about doing such a thing. There were no cultural frats on FDU's campus in 1991 and the one person pledging was too scared to tell us the name of the org he was trying to pledge. When I transferred to UB, obviously met and interacted with members of those organizations but as a member of the Caribbean Student's Association (the second largest international organization on campus) it was very clearly and culturally understood that "tings doan gwan so"
One day on campus, a member of Omega Psi Phi was heard declaring that he was better than any man who didn't pledge Omega Psi Phi. The campus took exception to this statement and a town hall meeting was held in Diefendorf Auditorium hosted by the Black Student Union. On the panel were members of the greek Fraternities and Sororities and people who were not affiliated with any of those orgs. It was a very divisive and hotly energized meeting and ended at an impasse with nongreeks feeling that such statements are destructive to our campus community and the greeks feeling that unless you pledged no one would understand.
That Spring of 1993 when I was back in Brooklyn, I was watching and taping Video Music Box. Malik Sigma Psi was hosting a party at Hofstra which was being filmed and broadcasted by VJ Ralph McDaniels. My interest was sparked to watch the show more closely when the camera turned to the pledges who started greeting with the word HOTEP. I was also a member of the Imhotep Society at the neighboring Buffalo State College so of course I wanted to know what did these guys on tv know about Imhotep. A brother was asked to break down what the organization was. He went on to clearly and succinctly explain that it was an African Fraternity dispelling the myths of civilization being seated in western culture but instead reclaiming the legacy of what Africans have contributed to the world and adhering to the principles of African Fraternalism.....I rewound that tape many times... He shouted out his phone number......and for some reason I decided to call it to find out more. That brother and I spoke many times. I called my friends and told them about this fraternity. They echoed my thoughts and concerns and encouraged me to find out more especially if they were African then why were they still using Greek names. The answer that was given was that the founders were forced to have at least 2 Greek letters in the name to be recognized and they flipped it so that the African name predates that of the Greeks AND they laid out the point that the Greek alphabet originated in Africa. This was pervasively drilled home by the majority of brothers I encountered...and I encountered a LOT of them.....
I asked a couple people who were members of greek organizations and they were very derogatory to this group and what they said on the Video Music Box show.....That sparked my interest more. I even visited the campus of Hofstra University where I met the then National President Duane Nelson (Musa) in the room of that brother that was my main point of contact. I was given a flyer with Malcolm on the cover and two hands breaking chains with the wording In a Climate of Miseducation, the Truth Awakens Change. I went home that evening after meeting the brothers seriously contemplating joining this organization for ONE reason. To provide the campus of the University at Buffalo with a distinct and clear fraternal alternative to the current orgs. I let that brother Malik Shekhem Adbdullah 11X Kefele know that I wanted to pledge eventhough I still had apprehension to the initiation process and what it would entail. I spoke to Hugh Lawrence Jr who directed me to Erskine Isaac Jr who gave me clear directions on using my resources at UB to engage the community, school and faculty on the rationale for bringing Malik Sigma Psi to the University at Buffalo's campus.
I Pledged & Crossed Sept 1994
Two hours after the crossing, I was on a bus back to UB. Once I got to campus, I started the process for developing monthly programs. One of them being the successful revisit of the original Greek-Non-Greek forum.
Malik Sigma Psi Days:
Did absolutely Nothing
Life After Undergrad:
Graduated UB early and enrolled in the Morehouse School of Medicine in Atlanta Georgia where I found myself in dire straits due to systemic issues at the graduate program I was enrolled in. I was homeless for 3 months and reached out to my brothers for help who guided me to one of the founders of the Thaa Kingdom, Dwayne Edmonds. He let me stay at his place for a short while however he started to exhibit very unbrotherly actions. He attempted to finagle and extort money from me eventhough I had none as a result of the school dropping the ball on my financial aid. Disgusted and determined I let the brothers back in NY know what happened and I left the "self professed Christian brother" home never to darken its entrance again. I ended up staying in the basement of a strangers home in Dekalb County where the the next 3 months, I ate bread and juice and had to walk 5 miles to the nearest bus stop to make it to downtown Atlanta for class. I was able to still maintain high scholastic achievement but thoroughly disillusioned with the entire experience, I transferred out of Morehouse School of Medicine to the University at Albany School of Public Health in 1997.
While at Albany, I vowed never to let that experience happen again and a year later, I encouraged Brothers Azikiwe and Belogun to pursue their graduate studies at the University at Albany.
I did absolutely nothing after that.
